Dachshunds can not tell time, so do not hide toys in your bedroom. If you do, don't blame me you missed the tip about whining.
It's easier to fall asleep to the sound of a squeaky toy than whining, they will get tired of the toy and fall asleep while they never grow tired of whining for the toy.
It is not easier to wake up to the sound of the squeaky toy at 3AM than a whining dachshund.
At 3AM hiding the squeaky toy under your pillow does not help you get back sleep.
Not long ago I began a serious grassroots effort to educate puppy buyers. I really wanted to make a difference in the quality of dachshund puppies being sold and it was my hope that if I educated the public on what to look for in a breeder, and not settling for less than the best, we could all begin to see healthier dachshunds being bred and sold.
Months later I felt like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. I have found that puppy buyers want a well-bred puppy -in theory- but not enough to pay a bit more to get one. They would rather take their chances with the cheaper puppy. 'Hey, it looks healthy and is certainly just as cute as the one that costs $200.00 more... Where does one breeder get off charging more than another unless they are just out to make money. I mean, all we want is a pet. Not a show dog.'
There are far too many consumers that are unwilling to seriously research the breed and the breeders. Many are not patient enough to wait for a quality puppy, buying the first one they can find. This just fuels the continuation of puppy mills, commercial breeders and breeders that see profit as a reason to breed. With a better educated and more patient puppy buyer we can help to put an end to poorly breed dachshunds. Without someone to buy what they produce, there would be no reason for a puppy mill to exist.
I hope you will find this site now and as it grows useful to help with questions concerning health issues, training, breeding practices, studies and resources. Questions and answers to ask a breeder, what to look for when purchasing a puppy or adult dog. For the sake of dachshund puppies, all puppies, that you will take the time to find out what you need to make the best choice if you plan to add a dachshund to your life. A good breeder and well informed buyer is the best defense to putting an end to puppy mills, large scale commercial breeders. Working together good breeders and puppy buyers can work together to bring healthier puppies into this world.
Some of the problems that are more common in dachshunds than other breeds are merely aesthetic and others can cost you many thousands of dollars and heartbreak. Don't let an adorable puppy that looks healthy fool you into thinking that under the surface there are not genetic problems ticking away.
Promise yourself you will be patient and wait for the right breeder to have a litter. Don't forget that many wonderful dachshunds are waiting to be adopted.
Consider grooming needs between the three coats, what dachshunds were bred for and do they still have their prey drive. Do you want a dachshund for the conformation ring, earthdog or a to cuddle on the couch with and take for car rides or all all of the above?
You deserve the very best if you are patient enough to wait for it. Every puppy born deserves the best health behind it and best odds of a happy and healthy life in front of it.
